Class 2
Welcome to Class 2
In our class we have Year 1 and 2 children. Our learning journey is as exciting and memorable as possible, following the Key Stage One Curriculum. Each day, we do Phonics (Read, Write Inc), Maths (White Rose Maths) and English, as well as two foundation subjects. We really look forward to having Chesterfield Football Club teach us once a week too! We have such a fun, busy school day and put the children at the heart of our learning, with plenty of opportunities for learning through play.
Miss Hewitt, Miss Peacock and Miss Lonergan
- Year 1 children will be taught by Miss Hewitt every day
- Year 2 children will be taught by Miss Peacock or Miss Lonergan.

Amazing things we are learning about!
Each term, our work is based around an exciting new topic. See details of these outlined below
Autumn Term – Childhood
Our main subject driver in Autumn 1 is History and we will be focussing on the topic ‘Childhood’. The children will use artefacts and a range of different sources to learn about everyday life and families today, including comparisons with childhood in the 1950s. Children will also learn about the six stages of life and learn that a family tree shows someone’s family.
In Autumn 2, we will be focussing on the topic ‘Our Wonderful World’. This project teaches children about physical and human features, maps, cardinal compass points, and positional and directional language. They will learn about the equator, hemispheres and continents and are introduced to the countries, capital cities and settlements of the United Kingdom. The children will carry out simple fieldwork to find out about local physical and human features.
We will study two Science projects called ‘Human Senses’ and 'Everyday Materials'. 'Human Senses' teaches children that humans are a type of animal known as a mammal. Children will learn about the senses, the body parts associated with each sense and their role in keeping us safe. During the 'Everyday Materials' unit, children will investigate the properties of materials and begin to recognise that a material's properties define its use.
In Art, our topic is ‘Mix It’ which teaches children about basic colour theory by studying the colour wheel and colour mixing. It includes an exploration of primary and secondary colours and how artists use colour in their artwork.
Our topic in Design and Technology is ‘Shade and Shelter’ which teaches children about the purpose of shelters and their materials. They will name and describe shelters and design and make shelter prototypes. Children will also design and build a play den as a group and evaluate their completed product.
In Computing, children will learn the skills associated with painting pictures on a PC device. They will explore changing the brush style and size, drawing shapes and filling them, using tools to remove mistakes and adding text. The unit ends with children creating a self-portrait. Children will also be introduced to the principles of programming through the use of Bee-Bots, including debugging simple algorithms.
In RE, children will think about special times in people’s lives and why they matter. They will learn why festivals are important to different religious communities and how people express their beliefs.
In RSE, children will explore their feelings and learn words to describe emotions in the 'Health and Wellbeing' unit. They will learn about healthy habits, such as sleep, handwashing, sun safety, and helping others with allergies. Children will also learn about different families and friendships, how to work well in groups, and how to solve problems in friendships during the 'Families and Relationships' unit.

Spring Term - Bright Lights, Big City
Our main topic driver in Spring term is Geography where we will study the 'Bright Lights, Big City' unit. During this project, the children will learn about the UK and its physical features and explore what makes a city. They will study human features in their local area, weather in the UK, and London landmarks, including the story of the Great Fire of London. Children will look at aerial photographs, compare life in London and Chesterfield, practice giving directions, and explore similarities and differences between capital cities.
The 'Seasonal Changes' project teaches children about the seasons, seasonal changes and typical seasonal weather and events. They learn about measuring the weather and the role of a meteorologist. Children begin to learn about the science of day and night and recognise that the seasons have varying day lengths in the UK.
In Art, our topic is 'Rain and Sunrays'. The children will explore line, shape, and texture to create their own weather-themed collagraphs. They will learn the technique of collagraphy, make their own weather collagraphs, and finish by evaluating their work.
The children will study the 'Taxi' unit in Design and Technology. The children will learn about wheels, axles and chassis and how they work together to make a vehicle move. Children will have the opportunity to create their own prototype taxis. They will then design, make, and evaluate their finished taxis.
In RE, children will learn about special and holy books from different religions. They will explore how Jesus teaches about God through stories and Christian beliefs about how to treat others. Children will also learn how different holy books are treated, hear a special story from the Torah for Jewish people, and learn about Muslim teachings on the Prophet Muhammad.
In RSE we will be completing the 'Citizenship' unit, where children will learn all about rules, responsibility within the school environment, jobs within the local community and all about respect. We will also be completing the unit 'Economic Wellbeing', where children will learn about bank accounts, wants and needs and identify their own talents. This will correspond with their learning in Maths where they will also identify and add British coins and notes.

Summer Term – School Days
In Summer, our subject driver is History and we will be learning about the topic ‘School Days'. This project teaches children about their own school and locality, both today and in the past. Children will carry out fieldwork and learn about the Victorian era, including Victorian schools, lessons, classroom artefacts and significant people such as Samuel Wilderspin. Children will also explore what their community was like in Victorian times, discuss when they would prefer to go to school, and make a time capsule.
We will study two Science projects called 'Animal Parts' and 'Plant Parts'. The 'Animal Parts' unit teaches children about animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and invertebrates. They identify and describe their common structures, diets, and how animals should be cared for. During the 'Plant Parts' project, children learn about wild and garden plants by exploring the local environment. They identify and describe the basic parts of plants and observe how they change over time.
Our topic in Design and Technology is 'Chop, Slice and Mash'. This project teaches children about sources of food and the preparatory skills of peeling, tearing, slicing, chopping, mashing and grating. They use this knowledge and techniques to design and make a supermarket sandwich according to specific design criteria.
