Woodthorpe Church of England Primary School

Learning & Growing Together To Be The Best We Can Be

Our Whole-School Curriculum Intent

Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum is driven by the need to prepare our children for lifelong learning and a life as well-rounded, respectful and caring members of their local  communities, who are also mindful of their role in Global Citizenship.

At Woodthorpe, we offer a rich and vibrant curriculum which is ambitious for all learners.  Through our curriculum, we develop the essential knowledge, skills and understanding which are the building blocks for later life.  Our curriculum encompasses not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but goes beyond the experiences of the classroom to ensure that our children are exposed to the richest and most varied opportunities that we can provide.  Our aim is to enrich every child's school experience by creating an environment where they are encouraged to succeed, take chances, and be the best they can be.

At Woodthorpe, the aspects covered within our broad and balanced curriculum, seek opportunities to promote ‘cultural capital’ and so equip our children with the essential knowledge and skills for their future.  The exploration of new skills and experiences help to nurture resilience, curiosity and creativity.  The curriculum is further enhanced by our commitment to Values-based Education (including both British and Christian Values) and, through this, we provide learning experiences which promote confident, self-motivated pupils that are eager to learn and so acquire the key knowledge and skills to take them on to the next stages of their education.

Our children attend a variety of Early Years and Nursery settings before joining us at the age of 4 years, in Foundation Stage 2 / Reception. We recognise that the early years are a very important time in a child’s life, as it is during this time that the foundations for all learning are laid. By the time our children join us at 4 years old, they have already developed a range of skills, and an understanding of the wider world, according to their cultural heritage and their experiences at home.

Working in partnership with our families, our church and local community, we provide children with the time and opportunity to develop and master new skills, in a safe and secure learning environment.  We aim for all of our children to have memorable learning experiences that inspire and encourage them to achieve their full potential.

Our School Vision

Learning and growing together to be the best we can be’.

We want everyone who is part of our school and its community to welcome each other and help us to be the best that we can be.  We want it to be a place where everyone is respected and included, whatever their age, disability, gender, race, religion/belief, marriage/civil partnership or sexual orientation, where we all share a love of learning that is full of exciting experiences.

Be strong and courageous because the Lord our God is with you wherever you go.  Joshua 1:9

We also aim to raise the aspiration of all pupils by providing an engaging and Christian environment alongside an exciting broad and balanced curriculum striving to develop the skills, attitudes and Christian values of the whole academy.

The values and ethos that DDAT is built upon are Christian in nature and represent values and principles that are important to people of all faiths and no faith. As a school in the DDAT academy, we follow their belief that Jesus taught us that he came to give life – life in all its fullness (John 10:10) and this important lesson is the link that joins everything we do together. It helps us to promote confidence, aspiration, wisdom, resilience and independence in every child. It is also key in developing partnerships with parents, the local community and the church.
